Microsoft Windows 7 RC Upgrade Information

It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate

While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC.

Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. For more details about replacing the RC, see the Knowledge Base article KB 971767. For more information, visit the Window 7 Forum.

Go for it! Had problems with dvd, would not do upgrade from vista but thats what it said on the tin! It stopped at something like 95%. So, using File Transfer (Win 7) from MS, I transfered files and setting to an external HDD. Then, using the same dvd, did a clean install. The box actually comes with 2 x DVDs for the price of one, a 32 bit and a 64 bit.

After an effortless install, I reinstalled KIS then went in and transfered files back across for 4 users, it also created their accounts as it came back over.

Oh yes, if during installation, and after a reboot, you get a screen asking to hit any key to load from dvd, dont - let win 7 open itself. It wont hurt if you did, but it takes longer.

All files and settings came across BUT - no folders, all I had saved was the links to the programs and all my bookmarks intact. Thep rograms (well actually some did!) did not survive the clean install but its not big deal, as I can do fresh installs on them too.

Games. All my games were no crossed over but the SAVES were!!! Yes! So I just reinstalled and carried on blatting the baddies.

Win 7 seems more solid too and without those poxy do you really want to do this messages in Vista!

Windows Mail is NOT included, MS must have decided its obselete BUT, if you have a 'live' email account it will load into hotmail no problem.

I still have to find my way around. As yet I can not find one particular feature I did like on Vista, the desktop in staggered windows, or is it called tiled, unsure. I did like that feature but still a long way to go yet, not even scratched the surface of win 7 yet, it will take some time.
